AMD Ryzen 7 5800X compared to the competition There's no denying the Ryzen 7 5800X puts up strong gaming performance compared to the previous generation. Playing a round to completion, my system averaged 99 FPS at 1440p with High in-game settings. Next, I gave Call of Duty: Warzone a go to see how it fares. Moving on to Red Dead Redemption 2, I got an average of 88.1 FPS with a mix of Medium and High in-game settings at 1440p. I next turned to Civilization VI's in-game AI benchmark, which measures the average time per turn for a crowded game. At 1080p with High in-game settings, CPU frames averaged 100.6 FPS. I started things off with Ashes of the Singularity's built-in benchmark using DirectX12. The 5800X isn't going to be a huge jump over the 5600X, either. Those extra cores are much better cut out for specialized software. In general, upgrading to the Ryzen 9 5900X isn't expected to make a huge difference in terms of gaming. Your mileage will vary based on the rest of your system. This section is much more dependent on the GPU, though that doesn't mean the CPU doesn't play a huge role. Now let's take a look at gaming performance. The Ryzen 7 5800X is an absolute monster when it comes to PC gaming. Idling, temperatures sit around 34 degrees Celsius, and it pulls about 21W of power. Also, under full load, it pulled about 93W at a 4.6GHz clock speed. Temperatures will thus vary, but with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 cooler, the 5800X sat right around 69 degrees Celsius under a full load. ![]() The Core i9-10900K doesn't offer any more performance in games at stock speed and even when massively overclocked isn't worth the extra cash and nothing Intel has can match it in Wolfenstein Youngblood either.AMD has cut the stock cooler it commonly included with its desktop CPUs, so you're going to have to rely on your own solution. In fact I'd go as far as saying the Ryzen 7 5800X is a good upgrade from the Ryzen 7 3800X too, especially if you have a powerful graphics card and like to game at high frame rates. It's fairly clear, then, that AMD has a winner on its hands with the Ryzen 7 5800X given it massively outperforms the Ryzen 7 3800X at nearly every turn, offering huge gains in games and content creation. If anything, AMD has understated the performance gains on offer from its Zen 3 CPUs, or at the very least, enthusiasts like myself weren't expecting such huge increases. Core i9-10900K: Is Intel Finally Beaten? By Antony Leatherįinally, power consumption and the test system drew just 237W under load at stock speed, which is nearly 100W less than the Core i9-10900K and on par with the Ryzen 7 3800X despite offering huge performance advantages across the board. The overclocks for the other CPUs I've listed are: I overclock each processor where possible so enthusiasts can see how much extra performance they can gain from doing this and you can see these results in the graphs. ![]()
